Brazil: Chaos ignites as shopper fight to get their hands on cut-price goods

A supermarket has descended into chaos after rowdy customers swarmed numerous items at discount prices all in a scramble to save some money.

The chaotic scenes unfolded at a shop as bargain hunters scrambled to nab knock-off brooms and cool boxes. Eager customers had been waiting patiently in an orderly queue outside – but the atmosphere changed dramatically the instant the doors swung open.

Shoppers began jogging before breaking into a complete sprint as they charged towards the reduced-price goods. During the resulting mayhem, one woman was sent tumbling to the floor whilst a tug-of-war erupted between two other shoppers.

One bloke was even smacked over the head with a cool box as tensions boiled over inside the freshly opened establishment. Local media reported the cool boxes were priced at 20 BRL (£2.83), while brooms were being sold for merely 2.99 BRL (£0.42).

The person recording the footage, Rad Calisto, had initially wound up the crowd with rallying cries of: “Go! Go! Go!” However as the stampede developed, he could be heard yelling: “No need for this! Calm down, everyone, calm down!”

The bewildering scenes took place in Cabo Frio, in Brazil’s Rio de Janeiro state, on February 8. The retailer, Tubarão Atacadão, stated no injuries were recorded during the ruckus.

A spokesperson commented: “During the opening, customer entry was carefully managed to ensure everyone’s safety and prevent any incidents.”

The statement added: “The large crowds seen at the store were due to strong public interest in the special opening offers, which at times led to heavier traffic at the entrance.

“We would like to stress that our team remained attentive and ready to organise access at all times, prioritising customers’ wellbeing, respect and safety.”

The business added: “We were delighted by the reception and the trust placed in our brand Thank you very much, Cabo Frio!”

The Daily Star previously reported on a topless man from Florida attacked several people with a metal shelf as he rampaged through a Miami supermarket.

The bizarre brawl kicked off after “two large parties of people” broke out in an “aggressive verbal argument” at Southwest 163rd Street and Southwest 95th Avenue at around 6 p.m., WPLG reported, citing police records.

Suddenly it turned physical, with two women commencing proceedings by clawing at each other and crashing into a display unit that propped up greeting cards. The half-naked man, identified as Climont Mann, is accused of picking up the large rectangular shelf and hitting the two women fighting on the ground.
