We tried three new iconic LEGO units for the large child in your life – from Star Wars to Ferrari

Daily Star Assistant Editor Richard Brown took some downtime to unwind from his (occasionally) stressful job…to build some LEGO. And he tried out three brand new sets to the market

There are two types of people in this world; those who like LEGO and those who say they don’t in a bid to look ‘cool’ or ‘grown up’.

No longer a pursuit just for kids, the blocky builds have seen a resurgence in recent years among people of all ages, whether they’re trying to capture some nostalgia or just zone out from the stresses of life.

And with everything from The Lord of the Rings to Harry Potter and Formula 1, and even a range of city skylines, there really is something for everyone.

I was recently lucky enough to get my hands on three new sets, all of which came out at the start of 2026, spanning three of my various fandoms; Star Wars, Back to the Future and motorsport.

And with all three now taking pride of place around my increasingly-cluttered home, I’ve had the chance to take a minute and reflect on the builds.

Star Wars AT-AT

The biggest of the three builds I had, and, comfortably, the most complex, the iconic AT-AT gives you the chance to recreate one of the most iconic scenes from The Empire Strikes Back, where Wedge Antilles takes down the giant walker using a tow cable.

Coming in at 525 pieces, it’s a medium-sized build that doesn’t take up too much space on a shelf but has an incredibly satisfying level of detail. It took me about two hours as a Solo activity but there’s enough work for two people if you need a Han…

While attaching all four legs to the base can be slightly fiddly for someone with as little finesse as myself, it’s worth the effort to capture a dynamic scene, complete with a Snowspeeder and the cable wrapped around the legs of the AT-AT.

This is one of the most iconic sets imaginable for any Star Wars fan, and, even if it is a little on the pricier side at £59.99, there’s nothing better than whacking on The Imperial March, cranking the volume up and zoning out.

Time Machine from Back to the Future

Great Scott, this one was a lot of fun! Coming in at a bargain price of just £22.99 for a 357-piece build, this new version of Doc Brown’s iconic DeLorean puts earlier iterations to shame.

Packed full of playful references to the hit films, it features everything from the OUTATIME license plate to the lightning rod and the plutonium chamber on the dashboard.

It comes complete with two minifigures of Marty McFly and Doc and the ability to transform the build into the flying version of the car from the second film, is a great bonus for the lower-priced build.

It’s only fairly small-scale but for 90 minutes of fun, it’s one of the best new sets I’ve come across in a long time and the attention to detail is superb.

It feels like LEGO has thought of everything with this one, even the ability to have Marty and Doc sat inside the completed car.

It doesn’t even feature too many stickers, one of my great LEGO bugbears.

Ferrari SF90 XX Stradale

If you haven’t got a cool £700,000 down the back of the sofa to buy the real thing, this brick version of Ferrari’s most powerful ever street-legal car is a pretty good alternative.

Another build in the Speed Champions range, it is once again packed full of detail for the low price of £22.99.

The last time I checked the LEGO website, there were 13 different Ferrari sets available in one form or another, so there was a real risk of this feeling like overkill. But it does a great job of realistically recreating the tricky curves of the real-life car, all while only using a small sticker sheet.

The new wheels look excellent and at 339 pieces, it marks excellent value for a striking piece to display once the build is complete.
