One of UK’s prime horse racing tipsters names his bets after two winners final week
Daily Star Sport’s chief horse racing tipster Jason Heavey got off to a great start with his new column last week thanks to two winners.
Jason is one of the country’s leading newspaper tipsters. In 2023 he did the rare double of winning both national tipping titles – the Racing Post Press Challenge and also the coveted Racing Post Naps Table. He is currently the leading “red-top” tipster in the country in the National Press Challenge table.
TROJAN SOLDIER (7-4) and THE BOOKKEEPER (5-2) were two nice successes to get this column up and running last week, and while their odds probably mean you won’t be ordering a new Ferrari, a winner is a winner in this game. In the case of Trojan Soldier, who won easily at Pontefract on Friday, he is worth following as he miles ahead of the handicapper.

THIS WEEK
YA KARIM (8.00) is a strong fancy at Kempton tonight. He showed huge promise as a two-year-old including when fourth to current Derby contender Item on his debut.
He did fluff his lines on his comeback run at Yarmouth last month when he threw away any chance by racing keenly and hanging to his left. But if champion jockey Oisin Murphy can settle him in what is a decent looking handicap then Ya Karim can be competitive off a rating of 83 from a very good draw.
ALTHER WALDEN (8.30) – and that man Murphy again – should leave his last run behind and also go very well at the Sunbury track. I’ll also be disappointed if SCORESBY (4.23) does not win at Newton Abbot today. He scooted up at Fontwell recently and should follow up. The same applies to LOWLANDS (7.08) at Cartmel tonight, who won with plenty in hand at Perth on her latest start and looks unopposable.
I don’t back many two-year-olds and tend to avoid maidens and novices packed with newcomers – just a personal choice. But there are two juveniles to look out for today.
DEI GRATIA REGINA (2.45) is first up at Beverley. The daughter of Ten Sovereigns has shown definite promise in two racecourse starts and may have been found a good opportunity – providing there is nothing out of ordinary among the debutantes. I’d recommend a small bet each-way with the magic eight runners. Her staying-on fourth to royal winner King’s Prize at Nottingham was a decent effort.
Hugo Palmer sends SALE SHARK (2.05) on the long trek north to Hamilton. He cost 52,000 guineas and is part-owned by Michael Owen – who also owns Palmer’s beautiful training base in deepest Cheshire. Sale Shark is believed to have been working well and in Jason Hart he has one of the best jockeys on the northern circuit in the saddle. Don’t go mad though – a watching brief is probably advised.
NEYVA’S ANGEL (4.23) is fancied at Yarmouth on Thursday. She fell out of the stalls at Ascot but came with a strong late run up the stands’ rail to be a close fourth. With better luck, she is a big player in the 0-80 handicap.
Finally, STORM POINT is a horse I’ve been waiting for and he is entered on Friday at Haydock. He was very unlucky at Lingfield when he was last seen on the track, continually being denied a run. He is a big tool and I am convinced he is a well handicapped horse off a current rating of 73, so wherever he runs next he is one to keep on side.
ANTE POST FOCUS
STATEIRA is proving a bit of a money spinner for Andrew Balding – and the best is yet to come. Last weekend she was an excellent third to City Of Memphis in the Group Two Lanwades Stud Stakes – her first go in a pattern race.
But that only tells half the story as she was very unlucky in running in a race won by City Of Memphis. The Duke of Cambridge Stakes at Royal Ascot could be an ideal target for Stateira – the race has not been priced up yet by any of the leading bookies but watch this space.
I’m building up a small ante-post portfolio for Royal Ascot and have taken the 14-1 available for NIGHT IN VEGAS in the Coventry Stakes. He has breezed to two easy victories and Eve Johnson Houghton clearly thinks the world of him.
FUTURE WINNERS
FANCIULLA DEL WEST: Travelled powerfully and stayed on well at Redcar over 1m2f to be second on just her fourth start. Ed Walker’s filly will stay further and is a surefire future winner off such a lenient handicap rating.
KING’S CAVALRY: He bolted up at Leicester and I’ll be on him wherever he turns up next.
TREFOR: Charlie Hills’ sprinter got no sort of run at Windsor on Monday and is one to keep on side.
AMAZING JOURNEY: Posted a fine effort on his reappearance at Leicester in what looked a good race and is one for next time.
