UK DWP state pension age change – which start years are affected
The DWP state pension age is the earliest date you can claim your state pension
The Department for Work and Pensions has announced that the state pension age will rise to 67 in June for people born in certain years. The DWP’s state pension age is the earliest you can start receiving your state pension, but now millions will have to wait longer to claim.
Previously, the state pension age for both men and women was set at 66 – but this is now being increased to 67. This increment began on April 6, 2026 and is being implemented in stages. The first group affected were those born between April 6, 1960 and May 5, 1960. For these people, the state pension age is now 66 years and one month.
Next up, those born between May 6, 1960 and June 5, 1960, will be eligible to claim their state pension when they reach the age of 66 and two months.
This cohort will be able to claim their state pension in July or early August, rather than May or early June. The state pension age will continue to increase gradually by one month until it eventually hits 67, reports Birmingham Live.
The process is expected to be completed by April 2028. Plans are also in place for the state pension age to rise again to 68 between April 2044 and April 2046, affecting people born from April 1977 onwards. There have been calls to expedite this change, but a decision on this has been postponed.
