Grateful Dead guitarist, founder Bob Weir dies as tributes stream for rock music nice

The guitarist, singer and founding member of the Grateful Dead, has died at the age of 78.

Bob Weir, guitarist, singer and founding member of the Grateful Dead, has died at age 78 with a statement released on Saturday that confirmed the passing of one of America’s biggest rock legends. He died of “underlying lung issues” following his cancer diagnosis in July 2025.

His death was announced on Saturday in a statement from his team. A spokesperson for Bob Weir said via the statement: “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Bobby Weir. He transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could. Unfortunately, he succumbed to underlying lung issues.”

The statement went on to remember Weir’s significant on music, with the US music industry now in mourning after the loss of a rock and roll titan.

“Bobby will forever be a guiding force whose unique artistry reshaped American music. His work did more than fill rooms with music; it was warm sunlight that filled the soul, building a community, a language, and a feeling of family that generations of fans carry with them,” the statement said.

The San Francisco-born musician joined a band called The Warlocks in 1965, which would go on to morph into the Grateful Dead, one of the most iconic bands in American history.

Only a few years later, Weir led the band as it played at the iconic Woodstock music festival in 1969. Their performance is widely considered to be as one of their worst-ever shows due to a range of issues that marred their performance.

Rain, sound problems, delays, and malfunctioning equipment all disrupted the 1969 show, with the Grateful Dead soldiering on nonetheless. A number of the bandmates were also repeatedly electrocuted on stage by live wires during the show.

Woodstock 1969 went down in history as an iconic moment in time for music and pop culture. For the Grateful Dead, it went down like a lead balloon.

Weir followed the disastrous performance with a stellar career that will see him remembered in the annals of music history as one of the greatest American rockers of all time.

He had been diagnosed with cancer in July 2025, with the statement vfrom his team saying: “He began treatment only weeks before returning to his hometown stage for a three-night celebration of 60 years of music at Golden Gate Park.

“His loving family … request privacy during this difficult time and offer their gratitude for the outpouring of love, support and remembrance.

“May we honor him not only in sorrow, but in how bravely we continue with open hearts, steady steps, and the music leading us home. Hang it up and see what tomorrow bring.”

Weir is survived by his wife, Natascha, and their two daughters, Shala Monet and Chloe Kaelia.
