Ex-England star Ruben Loftus-Cheek rushed to hospital after sickening head damage

A former England star was stretchered off and taken to hospital after sustaining a head injury in a collision with the opposition goalkeeper, with blood visible on his face

AC Milan’s Ruben Loftus-Cheek was stretchered off with a severe head injury, which left him in a brace, after a collision with Parma goalkeeper Edoardo Corvi.

The ex-Chelsea star had only been on the pitch for a few minutes before the incident occurred, with both players converging on a cross. Blood could be seen on his face and DAZN reported that the most serious damage was to his teeth.

The Englishman was transported to a local hospital for examinations, but remained conscious despite the distressing images that surfaced. Loftus-Cheek has been playing his football in Italy since 2023, having previously turned out for several London clubs, including Fulham and Crystal Palace.

The 30-year-old has been a consistent presence at the San Siro, but is now expected to spend some time on the sidelines, although no specific timeline or diagnosis has been provided following his injury, reports the Mirror.

Milan will have to assess the impact of Sunday’s events, with Matteo Gabbia withdrawing during the warm-up before they suffered a late defeat.

AC Milan currently occupy second place in Serie A and hadn’t tasted defeat in the league since the season’s opening weekend, but they trail significantly behind leaders and city rivals Inter Milan.

Despite plying his trade in Italy, Loftus-Cheek continues to feature in England’s thinking, so much so that he earned a surprising recall earlier this campaign.

He had endured almost seven years in international exile, but was brought back into the squad when Thomas Tuchel required some injury cover.

He hadn’t turned out for the Three Lions since a friendly against the United States in November 2018. He would subsequently rupture his Achilles in 2019 whilst representing Chelsea in a friendly ahead of the Europa League final, and consequently dropped off England’s radar.

Loftus-Cheek admitted in September: “When I ruptured my Achilles, I was on such a high [before it happened], so after that I had a hard time mentally. But I was still young, I still had time to come back, so I wasn’t too low.

“You still want to push in club football with the hope of maybe getting a sniff. But I just completely forgot about it and was being a fan of the team instead.”
