Blood-soaked world of Cartel Queens from hitwoman ‘The Doll’ to El Chapo’s spouse

Behind the designer clothes and private jets, these Cartel Queens lead lives of brutal violence, ending in prison cells or deadly hauls of gunfire

They are the narco-WAGs who live life in the fast lane, flooding social media with snaps of diamond-studded watches, designer wardrobes and champagne toasts on private jets. But beneath the polished veneer of the cartel queens lies a trail of bodies, blood and billion-dollar drug empires.

From beauty pageant winners to cold-blooded assassins, these women are the glamorous faces of the world’s most terrifying syndicates. While some function as financial masterminds laundering millions, others trade their lipstick for rifles, orchestrating hits and directing cartel movements from the shadows.

For many, the high-octane fantasy ends not with a glass of bubbly, but with a prison cell, a hail of bullets, or the crushing weight of international sanctions.

As global authorities tighten the noose on narco-networks, the women who once basked in ill-gotten luxury are facing a brutal day of reckoning.

Karina Abundis (La Chucky)

As reported by the Daily Mail, Karina Abundis, known by the sinister moniker “La Chucky,” was a twenty-something influencer who mastered the art of the pouty selfie.

Between shots of her designer outfits, she was secretly spearheading operations for the notorious Gulf Cartel. Romantically linked to a high-ranking kingpin, Abundis treated high-powered rifles like fashion accessories.

Though she reportedly tried to fake her own death in 2019 to escape a bloody internal purge, her luck finally ran out last month.

She was gunned down in a ferocious shootout with police on the US-Mexico border, dying alongside four fellow gang members.

Maria Guadalupe Lopez Esquivel (La Catrina)

Maria Guadalupe Lopez Esquivel, or “La Catrina,” enjoyed a meteoric and violent rise within the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG).

She took her name from the skeletal “Grand Dame of Death,” a tattoo she famously sported on her thigh in provocative social media posts.

Linked to the 2019 massacre of 13 police officers, she was known for her gold-plated submachine gun and seductive lifestyle.

However, her end was far from the cinematic glory she projected. In January 2020, footage emerged of a bloodied, terrified Catrina gasping for air after taking a bullet to the neck during a clash with Mexican special forces. She was just 21.

Jimena Romina Araya Navarro (Rosita)

Venezuelan DJ and model Jimena Romina Araya Navarro, known to fans as “Rosita,” curated an online world of effortless wealth.

But the US Treasury recently pulled back the curtain, sanctioning her for allegedly supporting the violent transnational gang Tren de Aragua.

Investigators claim she acted as a financial conduit for the gang’s top brass. While her feed remains a shrine to gold jewellery and luxury cars, criminologists warn her “curated image” serves as a dangerous lure for young women seeking a shortcut to status.

Emma Coronel Aispuro (El Chapo’s girl)

The most famous cartel queen of all remains Emma Coronel Aispuro, the beauty queen wife of the legendary Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman.

She defined the “buchona” aesthetic – a blend of high fashion, plastic surgery, and untouchable opulence. Coronel even paraded her status on reality TV, appearing on VH1’s Cartel Crew.

The party ended in 2021 when she was handed a three-year prison sentence for her role in the Sinaloa Cartel’s operations. Despite her fall, experts say her “untouchable” persona helped fuel the modern mythology of the narco-wife.

Julieth Ojeda Rodriguez (The Doll)

In Colombia, 23-year-old “La Muñeca” (The Doll), or Karen Julieth Ojeda Rodriguez, allegedly became the second-in-command of the Los de la M gang.

Police say her striking looks allowed her to slip through checkpoints while she coordinated assassinations, including the murder of her own ex-boyfriend.

When she was finally caught in December, her deadpan arrest photo went so viral that social media users began casting actress Aubrey Plaza to play her in a hypothetical biopic.

Marllory Chacon Rossell (Queen of the South)

Meanwhile, Marllory Chacon Rossell, Guatemala’s “Queen of the South,” ran a money-laundering empire so vast the US Treasury called her “one of the most prolific narcotics traffickers in Central America.” She eventually traded her empire for a plea deal, turning informant to secure a lighter sentence.

Claudia Patricia Alvarez Hernandez

The downfall of these women often comes with a stinging rebuke from the bench. Claudia Patricia Alvarez Hernandez, wife of kingpin Jorge Alberto Valenzuela Valenzuela, was recently sentenced to 14 years behind bars. She was ordered to forfeit $5million in luxury watches, cars, and cash.

DEA Special Agent James Nunnallee said: “For years, Hernandez lived in comfort while turning a blind eye to the violence, addiction, and devastation her husband’s cartel inflicted on our communities.”

US Attorney Adam Gordon issued a final, chilling warning to those still chasing the narco-glamour. He said: “Cartel WAGs are in for a rude awakening…There is a lie behind their luxury: that they didn’t know. This sentence reflects the reality.”
