The UK will not run out of jet fuel, a government spokesman has told the Daily Star. Yesterday, we reported how while the ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States roll on, the worldwide fuel crisis continues with seemingly no end in sight.

And expert warned that even if the Strait of Hormuz reopens as normal in the next few weeks, the crisis will not even for a long, long time – and it could cause chaos during the much-needed Summer holiday period.

Speaking to Russia’s Moskovskij Komsomolets news outlet, aviation expert Roman Gusarov warned that the pain is going to go on for the foreseeable future. He said: “No, it’s not exaggerating. We see that the situation around the Strait of Hormuz isn’t improving, and could get worse.

“There’s no more aviation fuel on the global market, and accumulated reserves are practically depleted. For example, in Europe, two-month reserves have already been exhausted.” But a UK government spokesman has hit back, and told us that there is currently no shortage of jet fuel.

A Department for Transport spokesman said: “UK airlines are clear that they are not currently seeing a shortage of jet fuel. It’s not true that reserves are practically depleted – we have stocks above IEA obligated levels “Only 0.53% of the UK’s planned flights for the month have been cancelled. In previous years, we typically saw around 1% of all flights arriving or departing from the UK cancelled Data from Cirium shows that only up to 0.2% of flights have been cancelled from June to August.”

And further information given shows that “there is no current need to change upcoming travel plans”. It adds: “Government regularly meets with industry to monitor risks, understand pressures and ensure clear communication with passengers, should circumstances change.

“We recognise that families may be concerned, and that aviation and tourism businesses are operating in challenging global conditions. We are working hand-in-and with industry to help flights keep operating.”

Under UK law, if your flight is cancelled, you are entitled to either a full refund or to be booked onto an alternative flight if you:

  • depart from an airport in the UK on any airline
  • arrive at an airport in the UK on an EU or UK airline
  • arrive at an airport in the EU on a UK airlin
