Award-winning racing tipster Jason Heavey backs big upset on Glorious Goodwood day one

It’s day one of the Qatar Goodwood Festival on Tuesday and the Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup is the big highlight.

The race is a rematch between Ascot Gold Cup winner and runner-up Scandinavia and Trawlerman. But the Daily Star’s expert tipster Jason Heavey thinks there could be a shock result. Here, Jason delivers his race-by-race verdict.

Jason is one of the country’s leading newspaper tipsters. In 2023 he did the rare double of winning both national tipping titles – the Racing Post Press Challenge and also the coveted Racing Post Naps Table. He is currently the leading “red-top” tipster in the country in the National Press Challenge table.

AL AALI is fancied to give William Buick the perfect start to a wonderful week of racing.

The four-year-old arrives on the back of a smooth victory at Newmarket 11 days ago – his first win since transferring to the Newmarket yard of George Scott.

Al AAli was rated in the 100s when trained in France and Meydan, but had slipped down the weights before scoring at HQ. He runs off 93 here so is still well treated and he has a nice pitch in stall six. He has been nibbled at in the betting already but his 10-1 odds still appeal.

Scott’s other runner Wave Rider has been popular in the market while Noble Horizon heads the betting following his runaway win at Leicester and Silvestre de Sousa will be keen to get to the front. Yabher bolted up at the track in May and is another big player although he is drawn wide which could be tricky for him.

Twisting Physics sneaks in at the bottom of the weights under talented 5lb claimer Ashley Lewis and he is a tempting each-way play at around 18-1.

2.25 CORAL VINTAGE STAKES

AL HUDAIBA can strike in a heavyweight clash between Godolphin and Coolmore. The son of Dark Angel is quirky and unseated Tom Marquand when clear at Yarmouth on his second start.

Will Buick has since steered him to two victories but after defeating Abraham Lincoln at Newmarket in the Superlative Stakes 17 days ago the jockey reported that he almost came off the horse who has a habit of shifting sharply to his left or right.

But he has stacks of ability and if he keeps straight and behaves himself he can master Aidan O’Brien’s Haffner despite conceding 3lb. The latter won a maiden at Newmarket and has a tall reputation.

Dr Rascal has done nothing wrong in winning both his starts for Oliver Cole and rates the each-way play at 10-1.

The other three have got some sort of chance and even the winless Pikachu is probably one of the best juvenile maidens. Undiscovered is unbeaten in two starts for Ralph Beckett, while Ruler’s Control was a solid fourth at Royal Ascot.

3.00 HKJC WORLD POOL LENNOX STAKES

LAKE FOREST should take care of his rivals if he is on a going day. The five-year-old has stacks of talent although four wins from 17 is a surprisingly poor strike rate considering how good he can be.

He has looked a stronger and more reliable unit this season with a facile victory at Haydock in a Listed race before flying home to be fifth to stablemate Almeraq in the Group One Diamond Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot.

Lake Forest has been tried over all sorts of trips but this seven furlong distance looks his optimum. In last year’s race Lake Forest got caught too far back and never got to the winner Witness Stand.

The latter would prefer slower ground but is a nice each-way price at 8-1. Qirat is a big threat especially if he can repeat a similar effort to his 150-1 victory in last year’s Sussex Stakes. He comes into the race in good nick after a tenacious Group Three win at York last month.

Marvelman, from the in-form Andrew Balding yard, keeps improving and has also has a major chance.

3.35 AL SHAQAB GOODWOOD CUP

AMILOC is a sporting punt to upset the big guns in the big race of day one.

Scandinavia and Trawlerman – first and second in the Ascot Gold Cup – dominate the market. But Amiloc has an excellent record at Goodwood – two wins from two – and this race could be set up for him.

He was an excellent sixth at Royal Ascot to Giavellotto in the Hardwicke Stakes where he was staying on strongly at the finish. Amiloc’s stamina is unproven but the indications are that he should relish the trip.

Trawlerman is likely to make it a stiff test and that could play into the hands of Amiloc – and, of course, Scandinavia. Aidan O’Brien’s stayer won this race last year before going on to St Leger glory and this season he has continued where he left off.

His epic victory at Ascot was a hard race and Will Buick on Trawlerman, who was having his first race of the year, may fancy his chance of gaining revenge.

Illinois, who was runner-up in 2025, is a big price at 28-1 for those looking for an each-way bet while Rahiebb should be more competitive than at Ascot where his stamina was stretched. Lazy Griff is interesting at 16-1 and although he would prefer slower ground they have put plenty of water on the track.

4.10 CORAL REWARDS SHAKER HANDICAP

DYONISOS gets the vote in the day’s toughest puzzle. Ian Williams’ speedy four-year-old showed a liking for the track when second here in the spring and he is in good heart after a decisive victory at Doncaster earlier this month.

Cieren Fallon is on his back and their draw in stall 15 should allow him to gauge which side to follow. He looks overpriced at 20-1.

Lexington Blitz is among those who are less exposed and he has produced three solid efforts this term including a course victory. The handicapper may just have collared him and his low draw may not be an advantage.

Run Boy Run is good on his day and Toby Moore’s 7lb claim brings him into the reckoning and although Germanic has not run since beating Quinault in January he is from a yard finding its form.

There are several seasoned pros who cannot be ruled out including Vintage Clarets, Regal Envoy and Spring Is Sprung. But the younger Adrestia – who was second in the race 12 months ago – holds more appeal with 4lb less to carry this year and Oisin Murphy in the plate.

4.45 BRITISH STALLION STUDS EBF MAIDEN STAKES

DORIGO is a value alternative to the hot favourite Launch Sequence in one of the hottest maiden races of the season so far.

Kevin Ryan’s son of the 2020 Lennox Stakes winner Space Blues has one of the best pieces of form in the contest – an excellent seventh at Royal Ascot in the Windsor Castle Stakes.

He was drawn on the wrong side where only the useful Sale Shark finished in front of him and he also had the jolly Sergei Diaghilev behind him. Dorigo is 10-1 and it is hard to envisage him not being involved.

Launch Sequence has been well punted on the strength of his debut third at Doncaster when he showed huge promise. James Doyle rides him instead of the other Wathnan Racing contender Final Objective, who was a strong-running seventh in the Coventry Stakes behind Great Barrier Reef.

Richard Hannon’s Agrippa was just behind Launch Sequence that day at Donny and rates a good each-way bet. Savage Mariner, who fluffed his lines in the Norfolk Stakes, and Severn Councils have both attracted support.

The latter made his debut in a Listed race at Newbury and Richard Hughes has snapped up Ryan Moore.

5.20 BOLNEY ENGLISH WINE FILLIES’ HANDICAP

CRAZEE ICON and her trainer Andrew Balding are both in red-hot form and she gets the nod in another competitive handicap.

The daughter of Sixties Icon has won her last two races, both at Chester, and I think there is some scope in her handicap mark. She seems to have clicked and a further 5lb rise may not be enough to prevent the hat-trick.

Crazee Icon is among a group of strong three-year-olds who could dominate this race. Annastarzy is another – she is bidding for a fourth straight victory and Joe Leavy has struck up a great rapport with her.

There may be more to come from Ralph Beckett’s Wid, who makes her handicap debut after a good win at Carlisle, while Proposal also commands respect. Charlie Johnston’s runners should be watched closely and Si Grass has plenty more in her locker judged on what she has shown so far.

Of the older runners, Rumba Numba and Nanino Niyati both have a solid look while Song N Dance should step forward from her seasonal return.

5.55 WORLD POOL BET WITH THE TOTE EBF FILLIES HANDICAP

ZEN DIVA (nap) can keep her cool and do the business for the in-form Ralph Beckett. The filly is hard to assess as she has won both her races this season by seven lengths and five and a half lengths.

The form might well be dubious but I suspect there is much more to come and off a mark of 81 she may be very well treated. Silvestre de Sousa takes over in the saddle and from a high draw will probably keep things simple and go forward. One of her wins came at Ripon so the undulating track at Goodwood should hold no fears.

This is a deep contest with plenty of improving three-year-olds and some solid older horses.

Bintaryana and Secret History are leading players and should be in the mix while Rogue Attraction is from the in-form Ed Bethell yard and she travelled sweetly before winning with a bit in hand at Carlisle.

Sing The Blues is another who looked ahead of the handicapper when she scored at Newmarket. Machadadorp (Oisin Murphy) is another big fancy
