A newlywed husband has died and his wife remains missing after their vessel crashed into a five-tonne water taxi.

Sean Michieli and Gabriella Querino tied the knot on June 8. On Saturday morning (September 12), the pair departed from Burano, Italy, aboard a small craft while hunting for bait required for Sean’s work.

Moments later, the couple’s vessel smashed into a water taxi weighing approximately five tonnes before going under. Sean, 25, was transported to Venice-Mestre Hospital suffering devastating head injuries and multiple trauma wounds throughout his body. He was operated on before being transferred to intensive care. Yet he was pronounced brain dead on Sunday, after extensive testing and monitoring.

On the same day, Gabriella’s handbag was pulled from the waters of the Venetian Lagoon.

Officers, firefighters and diving teams continue their hunt for the 26-year-old, though they face challenges from powerful currents and limited visibility.

Sean, who hailed from Cavallino-Treporti, earned his living as a clam fisherman, according to NeedToKnow.

He had shared his love for the profession with Gabriella, who originally comes from Ribeirão Preto, Brazil, and relocated to Italy approximately two years ago.

She had been arranging the required documentation and was working towards securing the permit needed for fishing employment.

Her mother, Gisele Elorriaga, told Brazilian media: “She was building a life for herself over there, and she was happy.”

The prosecutor’s office has launched an investigation into the incident.

The cause of the crash remains unclear, with factors such as darkness, fog and the water taxi’s excessive speed being considered.

The sole witness to the incident is the driver of the water taxi.
