It’s ‘Double Trouble’ For Trump On This Key Issue, CNN’s Harry Enten Says

CNN chief data analyst Harry Enten on Monday spelled out why Americans aren’t buying what Donald Trump is “trying to sell” as the president continues to reimagine the state of the U.S. economy.

“This is the type of thing that is political nightmare fuel,” Enten said.

Enten revealed that consumer sentiment in current economic conditions — as measured by the University of Michigan — has hit 52.3% this month, marking the “worst ever” view of current conditions dating to 1951.

“This is record-breaking in the way you don’t want to be breaking records,” said Enten, who noted that the figure is down 30% from January, when Trump took office.

A majority of Americans have also blamed Trump’s policies for worsening their economic conditions (61%) and for worsening their own finances (51%), according to CNN/SSRS and CBS News polling.

“This is double trouble for the president of the United States,” Enten said.

In the past week, Trump has peddled lies that prices have been down “substantially,” that there’s been “almost no inflation,” and grocery prices have been “way down” since he took office.

The president notably campaigned on bringing the “inflation nightmare” to an end and bringing down prices “very quickly.”

Enten later turned to Marquette Law School and ABC/Washington Post polling showing that 76-79% of “pure independents” — those who don’t lean toward either the Republican or Democratic parties — disapprove of Trump on the economy.

He added that it’s “no wonder” that Republicans were trounced in Virginia and New Jersey election races last week.

“If these numbers hold a year from now, the Republicans can wave adios amigos, goodbye to their House majority, and they may very well be bidding adios amigos goodbye to their Senate majority, as well,” he said.
