Man crushed to loss of life after being tipped into bin lorry whereas sleeping in dumpster

Sajmir Beca, 30, suffered catastrophic injuries after the horror unfolded in Northampton town centre in the early hours of October 31 while he was sleeping inside a bin

A homeless man met a horrific end after being fatally crushed when he was tipped into the back of a refuse lorry whilst sleeping inside a bin. Sajmir Beca, 30, sustained devastating injuries after the nightmare incident occurred in Northampton town centre during the early hours of October 31.

Emergency crews raced to Wellington Street around 3am following an alert from the refuse truck driver. Distressing footage circulating on social media shows the victim’s body visible in the rear of a bin lorry, surrounded by rubbish bags.

Mr Beca was rushed to University Hospital Coventry but succumbed to his injuries on November 6. An inquest into his death opened today (November 19) at the Guildhall in Northampton under senior coroner Anne Pember.

She confirmed the medical cause of Mr Beca’s death as multiple organ failure due to multiple crush injuries to the pelvis and lower limbs. The North and West Northamptonshire coroner adjourned the full inquest until April 29, where statements from Mr Beca’s brother and from police will be heard, reports the Mirror.

Homeless Mr Beca suffered fatal injuries whilst sleeping in an industrial bin that was collected by a Veolia lorry. A Northamptonshire Police spokeswoman said: “Police officers were called to an incident involving a bin lorry in Wellington Street, Northampton, just after 3am on October 31.

“Tragically, a gentleman suffered severe injuries and passed away in hospital on November 6. His death involves no suspicious circumstances and we’ve compiled a report for the coroner. Our sympathies go out to his loved ones during this difficult period.”

Homelessness charity Project 16:15 has confirmed the gentleman was familiar to their organisation. A spokesperson remarked: “News such as this makes the Tuesday Night Team fundraiser – to get as many rough sleepers in for Christmas – vital.”

Waste management firm Veolia – responsible for handling commercial refuse containers in the area – expressed being ‘deeply saddened’ by what happened. A Veolia representative commented: “We are deeply saddened by this incident which has tragically resulted in the loss of a life.

“Our heartfelt thoughts and condolences are with the loved ones of the person who has passed away. Our driver acted quickly at the scene and we will continue to support them. We have fully cooperated with the police during their investigation.

“Sadly, in the winter months we see an increase in the number of people taking shelter in bins. We will continue to work with colleagues and clients to raise awareness of this.”
