Leicester City have sensationally been relegated to League One just a decade on from lifting the Premier League trophy.

Heading into Tuesday’s crunch clash against Hull City, the Foxes sat 23rd in the Championship, were eight points adrift of safety and needed to win to keep their faint survival hopes alive.

However, Gary Rowett’s side were unable to pick up maximum points and have been relegated to the third tier for the second time in the club’s history, following their sole season in that division in 2008/09.

The Foxes started the game poorly, conceding in the 18th minute thanks to a Liam Miller goal after the Hull City attacker pounced on a loose pass from goalkeeper Asmir Begovic.

However, two goals in two minutes looked to have forced a dramatic turnaround for the Foxes, with Jordan James converting from the penalty spot before Luke Thomas gave them the lead.

Rowett turned to the bench shortly after with Harry Winks coming off the bench to boos and X-rated chants from his own fans after an altercation following the loss against Portsmouth at the weekend.

Just after the hour mark, the visitors levelled the game through Oli McBurnie. There were chances for Leicester to grab a winner, with Patson Daka stretching to meet a cross, but his effort bounced back off the post.

Leicester were furious with five minutes remaining when Hull goalkeeper Ivor Pandur came rushing out and mistimed a challenge on the edge of the box but only saw a yellow card, with the referee deeming it to not be denying an obvious goalscoring opportunity.

Luke Thomas went through on goal in stoppage time, but saw his effort blocked by Semi Ajayi. The defender almost scored an own goal deep into stoppage time, but saw his accidental header flicked around the post by Pandur to break Leicester hearts.

Overall, it’s been a disastrous season for Leicester. They started the campaign as one of the favourites to bounce straight up, but unfortunately for them, it has ended the total opposite.

The Foxes had made a bright start to the season and sat third in the table after seven matches, but the club’s form has dipped ever since and they have not been able to recover.

Indeed, Leicester, who were slapped with a six-point deduction in February for breaching Profit and Sustainability (PSR) rules, have won just TWO in 19 league matches in 2026.

Gary Rowett was appointed as the club’s manager in mid-February but he hasn’t been able to turn the tide with Leicester picking up just [nine] points from a possible [33] under his tenure.

Now, with two Championship matches against Millwall and Blackburn Rovers remaining, Leicester will be playing League One football next season.
