A man who died alongside his passenger in a horror smash on the M1 has been named and pictured for the first time. Umar Akbar has been locally identified as one of two people who tragically lost their lives in a devastating collision with a tree whilst driving a BMW on the motorway.
South Yorkshire Police responded to reports on the M1 southbound between Junction 37 for Barnsley and Junction 36 at Tankersley at 11.36pm on Wednesday, November 12. At the scene, a dark coloured BMW Saloon had been travelling along the motorway when it veered off the carriageway and smashed into a tree.
Both Umar and his female passenger – whose identity has not yet been released – perished despite paramedics’ best efforts. News of Umar’s passing was shared on the South Yorkshire Janazah social media page, prompting hundreds of heartfelt tributes, reports Yorkshire Live.
South Yorkshire Police continue to urge anyone who saw the collision or has relevant footage to get in touch.
Officers said: “We have launched an investigation following the tragic death of a man and a woman in a fatal collision on the M1.
