Body of man discovered on cycle path subsequent to Tesco as cops rush to scene in main incident

A major investigation has been launched following the discovery of a man’s body on a cycle path beside a Scottish supermarket.
The 51-year-old was discovered near Tesco Extra in Coatbridge on Sunday morning. Officers confirmed they were conducting “extensive” enquiries into the incident after the alert was raised at 7.30am. The man was discovered unresponsive on the pathway linking Centre Park Drive and Coatbank Street, which passes the superstore.
Emergency services rushed to the scene but the man was declared dead upon arrival, reports the Daily Record. A Police Scotland spokesperson confirmed: “Extensive enquiries are ongoing after the body of a man was found on a path in Coatbridge. His family is aware and being supported by officers.
“The death is being treated as unexplained and enquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances.
“A report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal. Officers remain in the area and anyone with any concerns or information can approach them.”
It comes as a major thoroughfare in Bolton is shut this morning due to a fatal accident that occurred in the early hours. Four people have been confirmed to have died.
A substantial police cordon has been established on Wigan Road in Deane, following the collision which happened around 12.45am. Photographs from the scene depict severely damaged vehicles with wreckage scattered all over the road.
A further five individuals have been transported to hospital after a car and a taxi were involved in the crash. The serious collision investigation unit of Greater Manchester Police is currently at the site. The road was sealed off in both directions from Deane Church Lane to Bankfield Street, reports the Manchester Evening News.
Greater Manchester Police said in a statement: “Our Serious Collision Investigation Unit (SCIU) are appealing for information and witnesses for further information following a fatal collision in the early hours of Sunday 11 January.
“At around 12:45am, officers attended Wigan Road, Bolton where a red Seat Leon was travelling down the road and collided with a Citroen C4 Picasso
“The driver of the Seat, and two passengers have tragically died following the collision. The driver of the Citroen was also sadly pronounced dead at the scene. Five injured passengers have been taken to hospital, where they are currently being treated.
“A scene is still in place at this time as officers continue their investigation. The SCIU are urging for anyone with information to please come forward. This includes anyone who saw the vehicle driving before the collision, witnessed the incident itself, or has dashcam/ CCTV footage of the incident.
