Man Utd legend Darren Fletcher’s son banned for six video games and fined over homophobic abuse

Manchester United academy player Jack Fletcher has been handed six-match ban and £1,500 fine after admitting to homophobic abuse during an EFL Trophy match

Manchester United academy prospect Jack Fletcher has been handed a six-match suspension by the Football Association following his admission to homophobic abuse.

Jack, the son of United midfield legend and former caretaker manager Darren, has been sanctioned and fined after violating FA regulations ‘involving a reference to sexual orientation’. A statement from the Football Association reads: “INCIDENT OF MISCONDUCT – NON-STANDARD CASE: Jack Fletcher, Player, Manchester United FC.

“Barnsley FC vs Manchester United FC Reserves – EFL Trophy – Tuesday 21st October 2025. Breach of FA Rule E3. – It is alleged that during the fixture, you acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words, contrary to FA Rule E3.1.

“It is alleged that the breach of FA Rule E3.1 is an “Aggravated Breach”, as defined in FA Rule E3.2, as it included a reference, whether express or implied, to sexual orientation.

“Jack Fletcher admitted the charge and elected a paper hearing. Decision: six-match suspension, £1,500 fine, Education order,” reports the Mirror.

The 18-year-old, who accepted the charge, was hit with a £1,500 penalty and received a two-game ban for the red card at the time. He has now been slapped with an extra four-match suspension after acknowledging an aggravated breach of FA rule E3.1.

He has already served three of those four matches, with only non-first-team competitive fixtures being counted.

“I am truly sorry for the offensive word that I used in the heat of the moment,” he said.

“Despite the fact that I had no intention to use the term as a homophobic insult, I completely understand that such language is unacceptable and immediately apologised after the game. I want to be clear that this momentary lapse of character absolutely does not reflect my beliefs or values.”

A statement issued by United regarding the incident declared: “Manchester United has worked with Jack to strengthen his understanding of discriminatory language, and why it is harmful.

“In addition to his ongoing participation in regular Academy programmes on diversity and inclusion, Jack will also take part in educational training through the FA. Manchester United prides itself on being an inclusive and welcoming club.”
