M66 and M60 visitors chaos as motorway stays closed after emergency incident

The M66 motorway remains closed in both directions this morning after an emergency incident on Sunday night – the M60 is also affected by the closure overnight

A section of the M66 motorway is still shut down this morning following an emergency situation. The motorway was initially sealed off on Sunday evening (November 16) as police, fire services and paramedics were called to the scene.

As of this morning, the M66 continues to be completely closed in both directions at junction four for Simister Island on the M60. Additionally, two lanes are closed on the southbound side of the motorway from junction three for Hollins to junction four for Simister Island.

Footage from the scene on Sunday night revealed a significant presence of emergency services. Accident investigation work has been ongoing throughout the early hours, with the closure anticipated to persist through this morning.

A spokesperson for National Highways stated around 10pm last night: “The M66 is closed southbound between J3 and M60/M62 J18 Simister Island. The northbound carriageway is closed within M60/M62 J18”.

“We are assisting Greater Manchester Police in responding to a collision.”

An update this morning read: “#M66 southbound has reopened between J3 and M60/M62.

“@GMPolice investigations continue at scene and are expected to last through the morning.

Police are instructing motorists about diversion routes including:

  • Leave the M66 southbound at Junction 3 onto Pilsworth Road.
  • At the junction of Pilsworth Road and Moss Hall Road, turn onto Moss Hall Road southbound.
  • Continue as Pilsworth Road becomes Hareshill Road and then Queen Elizabeth II Way.
  • Follow Queen Elizabeth II Way to the M62 Junction 19 roundabout.

A spokesperson for GMP confirmed officers responded to a serious collision last night.

More information on the incident is expected to be released by the force later this morning.
